Marie Hourihan confirmed as the new Republic of Ireland Number One
We can confirm the announcement from #IRLWNT 1st Team Coach Colin Bell that the former Chelsea LFC Number One and current Manchester City WFC Keeper will take the GK slot going-forward.
Colin commented "as we head into a new qualification campaign for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup, I think the timing of the decision is correct... going-forward Marie Hourihan will be the new Number One"
Marie "its an honour to represent the Republic of Ireland and to be given the opportunity by the new Manager Colin Bell to establish myself as the Number One especially in the World Cup Qualifiers. Its a special start and one that I'll grasp and give my absolute and full commitment to"
She will join fellow Manchester City star Megan Campbell in the Irish starting line-up on September 19th v Northern Ireland in Belfast.
Stephen Harrison of Beswicks Sports added... "I am thrilled to see Marie get the opportunity and I'm sure she will do a fantastic job for the Republic of Ireland national side. In Colin Bell she has an exceptional coach. I look forward to her next international world-cup qualifier in September; that said there wont be too much time to contemplate new opportunities as Marie has two big games for Manchester City in Toulouse against Montpelier and Lyon at the end of August"
"I am keen to grow our talent in the womens game and I see this as further validation that Beswicks Sports is now at the cutting edge of the womens game with two International womens players on our books at Manchester City along with Marie's colleague England U23s star Melissa Lawley.
