Your image rights are “the exclusive right to control commercial use of a person’s name, image and other identifying characteristics”.
Their value lies in the potential for you to sell or license them to others for use in areas such as product endorsement and sponsorship. The potential income from image rights will depend on a corporate sponsor’s purchasing power versus your current status of the sports personality.
In the past, sports men and women gave away most of their rights to their club when signing. This is no longer the case and the use of, and financial benefit arising from, a player’s image now forms an important part of contract negotiations.
